Origin and basics
The babassu palm (Orbignya oleifera) originates from the Amazon of South America, and its seeds yield what’s known as babassu oil, also known in ingredient lists as oleifera seed oil. The oil has a lightweight character and blends easily into haircare formulas. Much like coconut oil, it is high in fatty acids. One in particular—lauric acid—is valued for its ability to reach into the hair shaft and help improve strength.
Hair benefits
In our haircare, babassu oil delivers all the conditioning benefits of heavier butters and oils—without the greasy weight. Acting as a natural emollient, it smooths the cuticle, softens ends, and helps reduce breakage by improving hair’s elasticity. Because it’s so lightweight, it’s perfect for fine or low-density hair, conditioning strands without flattening volume.
Why we choose babassu
We use many different oils across our range, but babassu fills a specific need in haircare. Coconut oil penetrates well, though it is heavier and better suited for really damaged, coarse, curly, thicker hair types. Shea and cocoa butters calm frizz, but they feel heavy on finer hair. Argan brings shine, not strength. Babassu manages to cover several of these roles at once as it offers conditioning, softening, and strengthens without heaviness.
How it behaves in formulas
Its role in a formula depends on the product. In shampoo bars, babassu changes the wash, producing a creamier foam that feels gentle on the scalp. In conditioners, it pairs well with behentrimonium methosulphate (BTMS) to add slip and bind to the hair cuticle to help detangle, smooth, and soften. The result? Hair is left feeling super smooth and soft without heaviness or feeling weighed down that richer oils can provide. For sensitive scalps, babassu is often described as soothing and less likely to cause flare-ups.
Sustainability and sourcing
Babassu also supports local communities that gather and process the seeds. The work provides income, and when harvesting is managed carefully, it helps protect surrounding forests. At Ethique, we choose suppliers who prioritise fair pay and low-impact practices, so both people and ecosystems benefit.
