Change of product

I have been using the curl defining bar for 2 years. They have recently changed the formula and shape. Very impressed with the ergonomics of the shape, however very disappointed that it does not fit in the previous bar holders. They were an environmental investment that are now rendered useless, disappointing from a company who prides itself on minimising packaging waste. I also find the shampoo does not lather like the previous product.

Ethique

Thanks so much for your review, Lilly—and for your long-term support of the Curl-Defining Shampoo Bar. We’re really glad you like the new shape ergonomically, but we’re sorry to hear it’s created a mismatch with the previous bar holders. We completely understand how frustrating that is—especially when you’ve invested in storage to reduce waste. We’re currently working on updated travel and in-shower containers to better suit the new bar shapes, and we’ve shared your feedback with the team.

As for the lather, the Curl-Defining bar is sulfate-free and has always been a low-lather formula, designed to cleanse gently while supporting curly and textured hair. The new version includes a small upgrade—FiberHance™, a bond multiplier to help strengthen and protect hair—but otherwise remains close to the original formulation.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts. Feedback like yours is incredibly valuable as we continue to improve and evolve. 💚

Love the new formula!

I have always loved ethique's curl-defining shampoo, so I was a little nervous when the packaging and formulas went through a small change. I have been so pleasantly surprised - This shampoo lathers even better than the last, making it easier to fully wash my hair. It hydrates my curls, and it smells divine!

Very Nice

Bit of a learners curve to bar shampoo- but overall good, I liked the lather, the scent isn’t too strong, and my waves looked good after styling

Perfection

I absolutely love every Ethique shampoo and conditioner bar that I have tried so far and the curl-defining shampoo bar is no exception. I love the fresh lemongrass scent! Now that the weather is becoming much more humid here in the south, I thought I would try this bar. It delivers moisture and tames my coarse wavy hair! It totally eliminates frizz as well even if you spend hours outdoors! I don’t even need conditioner, but I am definitely purchasing the matching conditioner!

Why did you change the shape???

I actually switched to Ethique from HiBAR, because the teardrop shape of that shampoo bar was so impractical. First, I tried aerated soap sacks, which resulted in the bar becoming mushy and useless way too quickly. Then, I tried keeping them in their cardboard packaging, but the packaging disintegrated quickly. Ultimately, I switched to Ethique, which was a great quality shampoo bar in a normal, square shape. I bought the Ethique container with the ventilated bottom, and it worked like a charm. Now why on earth have you all have picked some other quirky & difficult-to-store shape for your formerly travel-friendly, gym shower tote-friendly shampoo bar? I just reordered and was super disappointed to find my new shampoo bar no longer fits the contained I bought from you. Sure, it looks neat, but it's totally impractical and not as easy to use. How am I supposed to hold it? Like a handle? Then I'm rubbing the narrowest part on my hair. Broadside? It flips around in your hand. And how is this going to wear down? With an awkward hole in the middle of the broadside or the wide part of the moon? Please reconsider this. It's a horrible design. Please also offer a travel container that actually fits the two bars I just bought, at least until you come to your senses and switch back. Here's hoping...

Ethique

Hi Courtney,

Thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience — we really appreciate your thoughtful and detailed feedback.

We’re sorry to hear that the new bar shape hasn’t worked for you. It’s clear you’ve put real thought into how our products fit into your routine, and it’s feedback like this that helps us do better. While the updated shape was designed with use and drying in mind, we know it’s not hitting the mark for everyone — particularly around storage and portability — and that’s something we’re actively reviewing.

The good news: a new dual-purpose container (for both travel and in-shower use) is on the way and is due to launch late 2025. We hope it helps address at least part of your concerns in the meantime.

Thanks again for being so open with your feedback — and for giving Ethique a go in the first place.

— Team Ethique
