FAQ

Phosphates are chemical compounds that help to thicken and stabilize liquid shampoos - ingredients like Distarch Phosphate or Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate. They can dry out your scalp and hair, which is a concern if you're dealing with dry hair, damaged hair, or brittle hair. For color-treated hair or keratin treatments, phosphates strip results faster. Environmentally, they wash into waterways and trigger algal blooms that kill aquatic life. The good news is that you don't need them for effective cleaning.

Literally all of them. Fine hair feels less weighed down. Curly and wavy hair hold definition better. Dry hair, damaged hair, brittle strands - all get gentler treatment. Color-treated hair stays vibrant longer. Oily hair breaks the overproduction cycle (phosphates strip too harshly, the scalp compensates by producing more natural oils). Thick hair and natural hair textures get respect instead of harsh processing. The real question isn't which hair types benefit - it's whether phosphates actually help any specific hair type. They don't.

Different chemicals, different functions. Sulfates create lather and are harsh cleansing agents—they're the bubbles. Phosphates thickened formulas and worked as stabilizers. Both can be drying. Most sulfate-free shampoos focus on gentler cleansing, but not all eliminate phosphates. Ethique bars are both phosphate-free and sulfate-free shampoos, giving you the best of both worlds without the tradeoffs.

Real ingredients that benefit your hair type, not just stabilize a formula. Coconut oil and shea butter provide moisture. Castor oil cleanses - it's actually great for scalp health. Vitamin C brings shine and protects against damage from styling, pollution, all that daily wear. The difference? The difference is that these moisturizing ingredients work alongside your hair's natural oils instead of stripping them out. Each bar combines ingredients differently depending on what you need. Fine hair? Volumising keeps things light. Curly and wavy hair? Curl-Defining focuses on moisture and definition. Dry strands? Hydrating loads up on nourishing ingredients.

Absolutely. Phosphates were never required for cleaning - they just made liquid formulas easier to manufacture. Our concentrated solid bars cleanse without needing phosphates for stability. You get effective cleaning, a good lather, and hair that feels healthy. The format lets us pack in more active ingredients and skip the fillers. Your scalp stays balanced, your hair gets properly clean, and you avoid unnecessary chemicals.
