Hi Sarah,
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your feedback on our Sweet & Spicy Bar and sharing your concern with us in regards to cost - we hear you!
For a little bit of context, the main point of difference (when comparing to other shampoo bars) that creates the price difference is the way the product is made. At Ethique, we use the melt cast method, which gives us way more control over the ingredients we use. That means we can include lots of lovely high-performance ingredients that wouldn't survive the extrusion process (which is the alternative method), like coconut oil, cocoa butter and shea butter. The extrusion method, which is a more cost efficient way of making shampoo bars, severely limits your ingredients to those which are stable at very high temperatures and high pressure, ruling out a lot of the most effective ingredients for nourished and healthy-looking hair. We have actually made an Instagram post on this (including a video showing how our products are poured) - you can view this here.
When comparing the price of our products to liquid shampoos on the other hand, the main point of difference that creates the price difference is the longevity - for example, our conditioners last 6 months on average, with some customers saying theirs last a year! Our values come into play as well - with ingredients, we use only biodegradable, palm oil free, naturally derived, and responsibly sourced ingredients which can be up to 15x more expensive than it’s counterparts. We are certified living wage (higher than minimum) employers and ensure that our suppliers are fairly paid for their goods (ie, ingredients).
We hope that with the demand for planet-friendly products - regenerative business costs (ie, home-compostable packaging, which is HUGELY more expensive than plastic bottles) can decrease and of course, that is a saving we would pass onto our customers!
I hope this helps explain why we are priced the way that we are, but if you do have any further questions or concerns, feel free to reaach out to us at hello@ethique.com as we're always here to provide more info. 😊 ~ Georgia
